McNabb’s New Deal

Donovan McNabb

Donovan McNabb

Rumored throughout the Eagles’ OTA’s was the potential for a new or updated contract for Donovan McNabb.  Well, announced last night, McNabb gets additional and guaranteed salary over the next two seasons.  However, there is no extension of years on the existing contract.  So, heading into the 2009 season, McNabb will be under contract with the Eagles for 2009 and 2010.  Quite frankly, I don’t think this changes the Eagles QB outlook for the future.

As I see it, Donovan McNabb was under contract for 2009 and 2010, regardless of this additional money.  The team gave Donovan some additional and guaranteed salary that he rightfully deserved.  McNabb outplayed and outlasted his contract extension he signed many years ago.  He deserves to be paid like the elite quarterbacks in the NFL.  What I don’t understand is why the Eagles didn’t push for more years on the contract.  A 34 year-old McNabb (assuming he is healthy) in 2011 is going to better than any other QB out there.  At least the Eagles should have given themselves the option.  McNabb would have signed an extension for security purposes.  Well, I guess the Eagles are content to have two free agent QBs heading into the 2011 season.

Here at Philatude, we are big McNabb fans simply because the Eagles don’t have the ability to get anyone better.  In fact, there are very few quarterbacks out there currently better than McNabb.  Donovan McNabb provides us the best chance to win games.  Only Andy Reid prevents us from winning it all.
